The Wrens Next issue 4: A New Way to Hold It All

Welcome to The Wren’s Nest
This is my weekly journal—a quiet space where I share the little moments that shape life at Rustic Wren. It’s a behind-the-scenes peek into the studio, the creative process, and the thoughts I’m still unfolding. I hope it feels like a letter from a friend.

Some weeks feel like a blur. Not rushed, necessarily—but ungraspable. You blink and they’ve passed, leaving scattered notes, half-done thoughts, and a quiet question: What just happened?

This post is a little reflection on one of those weeks, and what helped me find my feet again.

The Scatter and the Shift
Last week just… vanished. I looked up and the days had slipped past—half-finished lists, half-drunk cups of tea, and more open mental tabs than I could count.

As someone who holds both a creative business and a household together, staying focused isn’t always easy. I rely on my notebooks to help carry the load—but even that system had started to feel overwhelming. I had seven journals going at once (when you make them, it’s easy to justify, right?), but it was getting noisy.

Reimagining My Notebook System
So I sat down with a coffee and a bit of honesty, and looked at what was working—and what wasn’t. What emerged was a new rhythm:

  • One journal for personal reflections
  • One for work and planning
  • And a new catch-all learning book

This last one has quickly become a favourite. It’s messy, unstructured, full of podcast scribbles and favourite quotes—anything I don’t want to forget. Later, I sort through and move what matters most into what I’m calling my Wisdom Book—a more organised archive of the lessons I want to carry forward.

The “Still Processing” List
Alongside all this, I stumbled across a beautiful idea: the Still Processing List.
It lives at the back of my notebook—a place to jot down thoughts or feelings that haven’t fully landed yet. Sometimes we’re not ready to act or reflect. We’re just… absorbing. And that’s okay.

This list gives those half-formed things a home. A permission slip to be unfinished. I think we all need that.

In the Workshop
This past week was also a hands-on one. I spent time making new batches of leather brushrolls—restocking after a quiet spell. Lining them up, soft and worn-looking, always reminds me why I make them. Each piece feels like it already carries a story, waiting to be continued.

And… I’ve got a new shipment of leather arriving this week. I can’t wait to explore what’s inside—new textures, new possibilities, new pieces to shape by hand.

Gentle Reminders
This week reminded me of a few things I’m still holding close:
  • You don’t have to have it all figured out.
  • It’s okay to carry things a little longer before they make sense.
  • You can create space for the messy, unfinished bits too.

A Prompt for You
What are you still processing?

Could it help to write it down—without pressure to make it neat or complete?

If this post stirred something in you, I'd love to hear. Feel free to leave a comment or share your own notebook rituals. This space is always open.
